INVESTING IN THE PROMISE . . .
    BUILDING A LEGACY OF CHARACTER

Timeless Values At the beginning of 2000, the Old Baldy Council Executive Board took a bold step to move toward making the council financially self sufficient for the future generations of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Learning for Life participants.  The board launched an endowment funding campaign entitled Investing in the Promise . . . Building a Legacy of Character.  This theme expresses the need to fulfill the promise of Scouting to youth and to achieve the ultimate goal of the campaign and of Scouting -- to provide a place where young people can learn to become productive citizens with character.  With this campaign, the Executive Board has set a goal of having $10 million in either current or deferred gifts in the endowment fund by the end of 2010 - the 100th anniversary year of the Boy Scouts of America.  As a precursor and an expression of leadership, all members of the Council Executive Committee and well over half of the Council Executive Board have become members of the James E. West Fellowship by investing at least $1,000 in the Old Baldy Council Endowment Fund.

WHAT IS ENDOWMENT

Endowment is a means through which an individual or a group can financially invest in the ongoing work of the Boy Scouts of America within the Old Baldy Council.  Unlike the annual operating support fund drive through the council's Friends of Scouting campaign, endowment allows individuals and groups to make a financial commitment with a long term view to the work of the council in the form of either current or deferred gifts.  Endowment gifts, unless otherwise specified, are placed into a long-term endowment investment fund from which only the income is used to support council operations.  The fund is administered by the Old Baldy Council Executive Board with assistance from our fund manager, PFF, and the National Council, Boy Scouts of America. Investments in the Old Baldy Council Endowment Fund are designed to be in addition to, and not replace or diminish, the donor's annual support of Friends of Scouting.

ENDOWMENT RECOGNITION
        THE HERITAGE SOCIETY

To recognize those who invest in the promise of Scouting, we have founded the Old Baldy Council Heritage Society.  Donors who support Scouting's financial future with substantial investments in the council endowment fund become members of the Heritage Society.  Old Baldy council recognizes these donors through three distinct national BSA endowment recognition awards.  These programs are:

  • The James E. West Fellowship - James E. West was the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America and served in that position for over three decades.  The West Fellowship award is available to those who make gifts of $1,000 and up in cash or marketable securities to Old Baldy council's endowment fund.  The gift must be in addition to -- and not replace or diminish -- the donor's annual Friends of Scouting support.  Individuals and corporations also make these gifts on behalf of someone else such as in honor of an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, a retirement, special accomplishment or anniversary, or in memory of a special individual.

  • The 1910 Society - Remembering BSA's founding date, the 1910 Society award is presented to donors who make gifts of $25,000 or more to the Old Baldy Council endowment fund.  These gifts can be in the form of cash, securities, land, five-year pledges, or other property suitable for the Old Baldy council endowment fund or easily converted to cash.  There are four levels of recognition within the 1910 Society.

  • The Founders Circle - The Founders Circle recognizes deferred gifts designated for the Old Baldy council endowment fund.  With deferred giving (also called planned giving) so widely and effectively used by so many donors, the BSA wants to recognize the importance of such major gifts. Donors are recognized for gift commitments with a minimum value of $100,000.  Unlike the other endowment recognition awards, a donor may qualify for membership with gifts made through such vehicles as charitable bequests in a will or codicil; charitable trusts; BSA Gift Annuities or BSA Pooled Income Fund gifts; life insurance/Retirement Plan designations; BSA Pooled Income Fund gifts; and other deferred gifts approved by Old Baldy council.  As with the 1910 Society, there are four levels of recognition.
