Basic Leader Training - Leader Specific TrainingOnce an adult leader had completed his or her program's Fast Start and New Leader Essentials training, it's time to move on to Leader Specific training. With a solid overview of BSA's values-based program, a new volunteer leader can begin trainig for a specific Scouting position through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies. Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants:
Cub Scout Leader Specific Training - Tiger Cub Den leaders, Cub Scout Den leaders, Webelos Den leaders, Cubmasters, and Pack Committee members can complete this training in one day or two or three evenings. The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials and the Leader Specific training for his or her position. Boy Scout Leader Specific Training - For Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Coaches, this training is divided into four parts. The first three parts concentrate on troop operation and can be completed in one full day or three evenings. The forth part, which focuses on outdoor skills, lasts approximately a day and a half, depending on the skill level of the new leader. The new Boy Scout leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster and assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific training, and the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills course. For troop committee members, Leader Specific training includes the Troop Committee Challenge. By following the Troop Committee Syllabus, participants can complete the challenge in three hours, after which they are considered trained. Venturing Leader Specific Training - Developed for Venturing Advisors, associate Advisors, and crew committee members, this training incorporates Venturing's adult leader training. New Leader Essentials and Venturing Leader Specific training can be completed in one day, after which the leader is considered to be trained. The total Basic Leader Training program and its two parts may be delivered over time - training in one or more evenings a week or month - or in a one-day training event that incorporates all programs. Training is suitable for large or small groups and may be presented to leaders of one or more units at a time. Delivery of Basic Leader Training, including New Leader Essentials, is the responsibility of the council and district training committees. |
