Whether it be Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, or Venturing, leadership development is a process that continues as long as an individual is actively involved. To meet the ongoing needs of the program, a four step training plan has been developed. The four steps are Fast Start, Basic Leader Training, Supplemental Training, and Advanced Training.
- Fast Start training is the initial training for adult leaders in the traditional Scouting programs and consists of video-taped programs and written guides. Tapes are the primary training tool available for leaders in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Venturing provides a written guide entitled New Crew Start-Up Orientation and a supplemental video tape.
- Basic Leader Training for adult leaders consists of two primary components with a third for Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters. New Leader Essentials for all leaders and Leader Specific training based on position constitute the core of Basic Leader Training. In addition, Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters are required to take the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills course. Basic leadership training for youth Boy Scouts and Venturers takes place in the Troop or Crew.
- Supplemental Training includes a variety of training experiences designed to give additional information on specific areas within the Scouting Program. Roundtable, BALOO, High Adventure, and Youth Protection training are but a few of the supplemental training opportunities offered by Old Baldy Council. Additionally, both youth and adult supplemental training courses are also offered through the National Council at the Philmont Training Center in New Mexico and at the Florida Sea Base as well as regionally conducted Powder Horn for adult Venturing leaders.
- Advanced Training includes Wood Badge as the core leadership training course for adult leaders from all programs within the BSA. For the youth in Boy Scouts, Old Baldy Council conducts council level Junior Leadership Training, Buckskin. The national council also supports annual Nature of Leadership treks for Venturing youth members.
